NO ARCHAEOLOGICAL DAMAGES IN Astete told Andina that “there are no emergency reports inside the Inca citadel, the only concern is the increase in the level of the Vilvanota river.” Most tourists are leaving the town of Machu Picchu (formerly known also as Aguas Calientes) due to rain and transportation issues. According to Fernando Astete, the possibility of suspending visits to the Inca fortress because of the bad weather has not yet been discussed. “There would be a meeting to address this situation." "The Vilcanota river, 15 kilometres from Machu Picchu, flowed over its banks, and there have been four or five collapses of structures in this Cultural Heritage (asset)," said Cusco Mayor Luis Flores as quoted by DPA. Heavy rain in recent days also caused the Aramayo and Huatanay Rivers to flood their banks, destroying crops and homes across Cusco, in Peru's southern Andes. Bus services linking Cusco to other regions have been cancelled, and at least eight domestic flights were unable to land at Cusco airport.

OVER 67000 BRITISH TOURISTS "We still don’t have the 2009 figure but there will be a decrease compared to 2008, when 67000 British tourists came to Peru," said British Ambassador to Peru, Catherine Nettleton. "But I'm sure we will see a rapid recovery this year because Britons are great travelers and Peru is on the spotlight, so there won’t be another fall but an increase,”, she added. The diplomat made these statements during the launch of the “Know Before You Go" campaign. This is the fourth year that this campaign is launched in our country with the aim of providing valuable information to British tourists before they come to Peru. "The purpose is to inform the many tourists coming to Peru, most of them have not experienced any problem during their trip, only a small percentage faced mishaps so this campaign aims to prevent them,” said Nettleton. The campaign is promoted by the British Embassy in Lima in a joint work with Unicef, the Red Peruana contra la Pornografía Infantil (The Peruvian Network Against Child Pornography), the Minsitry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, IPeru and the Tourist Police.

That is why we expect that during 2010 we can reach the numbers registered in 2008, which was a good year,” she mentioned.
