MACHU PICCHU AMONG BRITS'
FAVOURITE EXOTIC DESTINATIONS
ANDINA.- The 2009 Guardian and Observer Travel Awards have highlighted British holidaymakers' interest in exotic destinations and Peru's Inca citadel of Machu Picchu has been included among their top choices.

Machu Picchu, one of the new seven wonders of the world, ranks third after Iguazu Falls on the border between Argentina and Brazil and Angkor temple complex in Cambodia, according to The Guardian.

The Grand Canyon in the US and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia complete the list in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

In other awards, New Zealand took top place for the second consecutive year in the category covering Britons' favourite long-haul countries, while Switzerland was named the top European nation ahead of Norway and Austria.

Sydney won the award for the most popular overseas city, while Cape Town jumped five places to second and New York came in third.

HOTEL INVESTMENT IN AREQUIPA TOTALLED
US$ 30 MILLION IN LAST THREE YEARS

ANDINA.- Due to the remarkable tourist growth in Arequipa, the investment in hotel infrastructure totaled $30 million in the last three years, said Jose Carlos Cuentas-Zavala Rondon, executive director of the Competitiveness, Innovation and Development Program.

The three and four star hotels were the ones that caught more private investment in the city of Arequipa, as well as the accomodations in the Colca Valley, which in recent years has become a tourist area with big tourist flow.

The representative of the organization specialized in local tourism, said that the decision of the private sector to invest in the hotel business responds to the need of meeting the tourism demand in Arequipa, where the inflow of national and foreign visitors has grown considerably.

Within this growth of hotel infrastructure investment are also hosting centers that have improved and expanded its facilities over the last year aiming to offer its occupants the best possible stay in the city, said the specialist.

Besides the growth of tourism in Arequipa, the different international events taking place in the White City since last year have encouraged the private sector to invest in tourist infrastructure.

Regarding the local tourism, Cuentas-Zavala noted that this has significantly increased, especially on the route to the Colca Valley, where the tourist inflow of people from Arequipa interested in this natural area grew 15% last year.

Seasonal tourism (summer) towards the beaches of Camaná and Islay is another area that has grown by 20%, which also motivated the lodging houses and two-star hotels to open their doors this season to receive people.

ANDINA.- Peru has received 39,536 Brazilian visitors in the first half of the year, a 36.45 percent rise compared to the same period in 2008, which constitutes the best growth prospects of all markets monitored by Peru's Tourism and Export Promotion Board (PromPerú).

Only in 2008, 62.902 Brazilian visitors came to Peru; there are now 33 direct flights a week, linking the two countries, which has helped increase tourist arrivals from Europe.

PERU, ECUADOR TO BOOST AIR
CONNECTIVITY TO INCREASE TOURISM
ANDINA.- Peru and Ecuador have agreed to boost the air connectivity aiming to increase the number of tourists that visit both countries since there is potential to develop this sector, Peruvian trade minister Martin Perez said.

After participating in the 3rd Binational Cabinet Meeting held on Piura, he said that Ecuadorian airline Tame will offer direct flights between Piura and Santa Rosa, in the Oro province, as a first destination to operate in the framework of this increased connectivity.

Minister Perez said that the new regional airport of Santa Rosa will be inaugurated by this year-end, which will allow the operation of wide-range planes between the south of Ecuador and the northern part of Peru, treating them as domestic flights and thus lowering their prices.

“Tame has confirmed their intention to do these flights and the idea is to treat them as national flights and lower their prices to promote tourism,” he told Andina.

He said that currently there are 128,000 Ecuadorian tourists that go to Peru, compared to the 150 Peruvians who visit Ecuador.

PERU TO BOOST AIR CONNECTIVITY, FOREST
CONSERVATION IN APEC TOURISM MEETING
ANDINA.- Peru will boost issues like air connectivity, climate change and tropical forest conservation in the next Tourism Working Group Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, to be held in Lombok (Indonesia) in April 2010, Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported.

“These will be the main issues Peru would propose for the agenda since countries are increasingly worried about the impact of global warming and climate change, not only in environmental but also in social and economic issues,” Vice Minister of Tourism Pablo Lopez de Romaña said.

In relation to the balance of the 35th Tourism Working Group Meeting, held last week in Cusco, he pointed out that 12 member economies attended this event, and two economies invited, while 9 economies were unable to attend.

“The first issue discussed in this meeting was Tourism and Handicrafts: Strategic Alliance by Peru, which attracted the interest of several economies, especially Japan,” he told Andina News Agency.

Other issues discussed were Community Tourism Management by Malaysia, as well as Carbon Impressions: Answer to Climate Change in APEC Region by New Zealand.

PERUVIAN ARCHAEOLOGISTS FIND 17 500-YEAR-OLD
WOOD STATUETTES IN CHAN CHAN CITADEL
ANDINA.- After several weeks of excavations a total of 17 wood statuettes of more than 500 years old found at Ñain An Palalce, located in Chan Chan mud-built citadel (Trujillo province), were presented on Monday.

Cristobal Campana, Director of 110 Executing Unit, responsible for the restoration and conservation of the largest mud-built citadel in the world, said they found a total of 17 anthropomorphic wood statuettes, which are built on the ground and within a few vaulted niches in the sides of the ceremonial temple entrance.

“We have found 20 vaulted niches, but only 17 statuettes. We believe that the missing 3 were removed by settlers before closing the temple,” he said.

“This is the most important find in the last years and performed by Peruvian archaeologists in Chan Chan citadel. At present, 16 specialists are performing restoration works in situ,” he added.

He pointed out that these statuettes may have been placed in this area between 1350 and 1400 A.D., period that belongs to the Chimu culture, largely developed in northern Peru.

LIMA STILL FAVORITE TO
HOST 2015 PAN AM GAMES
ANDINA.- The Peruvian capital of Lima is again the most voted city to host the 2015 Pan American Games according to a survey carried out by Spanish blog 20minutos.es.

In the contest “¿A qué ciudad eliges?” (Which city do you choose?) Lima has received a total of 21,069 votes, while Bogota and Toronto have received 21,041 and 5,649 votes, respectively.

The head of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), Arturo Woodman, said that the National Stadium will be remodeled by August 2010.

“The remodeling of the National Stadium will be ready next year, the important thing is that the initiative of President Alan Garcia has begun already. It is the government’s interest to host the Pan American Games. With the remodeling of the stadium we show our interest,” he noted.

Woodman asked all Peruvians to support Lima’s bid to host this big sports event that would generate profits to Peru.

The host city of the 2015 Pan Am Games will be announced on November 6 by the Pan-American Sports Organization (ODEPA) in the city of Mexico.

HOTELS IN CUSCO'S SACRED VALLEY
HELP PRESERVE ENVIRONMENT
ANDINA.- In a bid to promote the use of biodegradable non-polluting products, hotel administrators in Cusco's Sacred Valley of the Incas have developed a project to make about 5000 paper bags in order to decrease the excessive use of plastic ones, which damage the environment and cannot be recycled.

Edwin Gonzalez, president of Cusco's Association of Hotels, Restaurants ans Related Businesses, said that this initiative was discussed during the "Campaign for Corporate Social Responsibility", organized for the third consecutive year by the hotels and inns in Cusco.

Gonzalez pointed out that plastic bags last for hundreds of years before turning into small toxic particles.

He warned that there is an excessive increase of plastic bags in the Sacred Valley and Cusco, which are mostly dumped into rivers and agricultural fields.

"This idea is still a project: we need a work plan. But we will do our best to implement it," he said.

TWO IL DIVO MEMBERS TO SPEND FREE TIME
SIGHTSEEING LIMA BEFORE CONCERT
ANDINA.- Two of four Il Divo members will arrive in Lima at midnight to go sightseeing in the Peruvian capital city. The famous quartet will perform a concert on Friday, October 23.

Both Spanish baritone Carlos Marin and US tenor David Miller decided to come earlier to get settled in and experience tourism in the colonial city.

Marin and Miller will arrive a day early, after a flight from the United States, to take advantage of their stay and explore some tourist attractions of our capital.

The other two group members will arrive last Thursday in order to make the final arrangements to their concert at Jockey Club del Peru facilities.

The “An Evening with Il Divo” tour started on February 21st in Manchester, UK, is a two-year tour which includes stops in over 150 countries in Europe, Latin America and South Africa.

Because this is the first time they are visiting our country, a group of fans prepared a special welcome to the multinational operatic pop vocal group.
