SAN AGUSTIN HOTEL CHAIN TO INVEST
OVER US$10 MILLION IN TOURISM PROJECTS

ANDINA.- San Agustin Hotel Chain (HSA) will invest US$10.5 million in the construction of a hostel and a hotel in Paracas in Peru's Ica region, as well as other hotel in the Andean city of Cusco, HSA President Manuel Garcia said.

After solving some environmental problems, they began construction works of the San Agustin Tourist Hostel project, which includes a modern tourist hostel and an ecological hotel located in Paracas Bay, in the area known as Chaco – La Puntilla.

“A change in the environmental legislation forced us to reformulate the project, but we have already begun works and we will not stop,” he said.

He pointed out that works will be finished in December 2010, when international crisis may be settled, which also had a negative impact on the hotel sector.

“We hope there is a recovery in this sector in 2011,” he added.

San Agustin Tourist Hostel will be built in an 11,592 square meters area and will have 202 beds, a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, hall. Also balconies, gardens, parking lots, among other services.

This place is designed for tourists who love the sea and marine life.

TOURISM IN PERU TO GENERATE US$14 BILLION
IN REVENUES IN NEXT TEN YEARS

ANDINA.- Tourism in Peru is likely to generate US$14 billion in revenues in the next ten years, said experts Peter Kraft and Tibisay Monsalve, after holding a meeting with the president of the Directing Counsel of the National Center of Strategic Planning (Ceplan), Agustin Haya de la Torre.

Both experts agreed to strengthen this sector, which according to a recent study could increase its revenues from US$2.4 billion to $14.8 billion in 2018.

“It is necessary that Peru improves its tourist offer, starting with airports and ports, along with promoting the entry of new airlines and favoring hotel investments,” Kraft said.

Monsalve stated it's urgent to train hotel specialized technicians, and consider a priority the creation of schools, providing competitive learning.

Finally, both Kraft and Monsalve said that most entrepreneurs show interest to participate in strengthening tourism policies, according to a poll conducted by the experts.

BRAZILIAN TOUR OPERATORS TO PROMOTE
PERU AS A TOURIST DESTINATION

ANDINA.- The largest Brazilian tour operators will promote Peru as a tourist and gastronomy destination, Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Martin Perez said.

"We have met with the leading Brazilian operators, since we are promoting a new scheme which seeks to make not only trade but also gastronomy, craft and investment missions," he told Andina news agency.

In this regard, Perez said that Peru's Tourism and Export Promotion Board (PromPerú) recently signed a shared advertising agreement with CVC, the largest tour operator in Brazil.

CVC is the first operator in Latin America and is among the ten largest operators in the world. In addition, It has 320 outlets and 7,000 travel agents in its distribution network.

"This is an operator which accounts for nearly half of tourists moving in and out of Brazil. Now, with this convention we make shared advertising to bring more tourists to Peru."

PROMPERU TO PROMOTE TOURISM IN
SOUTHERN PERU FROM BRAZILIAN BORDER CITIES

ANDINA.- Peru's Tourism and Export Promotion Board (Promperu) will organize the event called “Border Seminar”, from November 4 to 6 in cities of Rio Branco and Porto Velho (Brazil) to promote receptive tourism in southern Peru.

Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) said that this event is aimed at tourism professionals and end consumers, in order to provide in a direct way the specialized and current information on Peruvian tourist destinations, especially of Arequipa, Cusco, Puno and Madre de Dios regions.

Mincetur authorized the trip of a Promperu official to these cities to develop activities related to the tourist promotion of Peru in that seminar.

Promperu has also planned the participation together with 40 tourist enterprises of Peru in the 2009 World Travel Market (WTM) International Tourism Fair, to be held from November 9 to 12 in London (United Kingdom).

The goal is to strengthen Peru’s position as tourist destination and diversify the Peruvian tourist offer, promoting new destinations and tourist products the country offers.

MORE INCA STRUCTURES DISCOVERED
IN ANCIENT CONVENT IN CUSCO

ANDINA.- The archaeological research investigations in the convent of Los Agustinos in the city of Cusco, where a Marriot Hotel is being constructed, have led to the discovery of more structures from the Inca times.

Irwin Ferrandiz, head of the archaeological monitoring plan, explained that the founding consists of two walls that will be renewed to enhance the future hotel complex.

One of the walls, considered the most important, is 70 cm tall and 80 cm wide.

On the other hand, near the archaeological findings was found an Inca tomb with 4 stone objects and ceramics.

Ferrandiz remarked that the edification of the hotel is being adapted to the archaeological findings, to preserve them and put value in them.

PET SHOP BOYS EXPRESS EXCITEMENT
FOR ARRIVAL IN PERU ON TWITTER

ANDINA.- On their Twitter page, British synthpop band Pet Shop Boys have expressed their excitement for their arrival in the Peruvian capital of Lima on Saturday night.

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe posted this tweet: “Exciting arrival in Lima yesterday (Saturday) night!”

The legendary British duo was welcomed at Jorge Chavez International Airport by a group of cheering fans who gathered and waited for hours to see their idols.

Pet Shop Boys are in Peru to perform at Lima's Jockey Club del Perú as part of their global Pandemonium 2009 Tour.

On Saturday night, Tennant and Lowe sang and drank pisco sour with Peruvian TV host Gisela Valcarcel on her "El Show de los Sueños” where the duo had “a lot of fun”, according to another tweet.

UCAYALI USES SOCIAL NETWORKS
TO PROMOTE TOURISM

ANDINA.- Authorities in the jungle region of Ucayali in eastern Peru are using social networks like Twitter, Facebook and Hi5 to promote the local tourist attractions and attract more tourists.

“This is an efficient tool to attract more domestic and foreign tourists,” local tourism official Oscar Vasquez Alva told Andina.

“Through Twitter, for example, you can receive information about location, access roads, regional cuisine, upcoming events, photo galleries and videos of handicrafts made by native communities,” he said.

Vasquez praised the works performed by Yine native community, located in the district of Sepahua, Atalaya province, where textiles with natural dyes are made.

On Hi5, Ucayali authorities have posted nearly 60 photos of the natural beauty of this area.

Ucayali also uses Flickr and a blog to promote the main activities celebrated every year.

COMMUNITY-BASED RURAL TOURISM
PROMOTED IN COLCA VALLEY

ANDINA.- Authorities in the southern Peruvian region of Arequipa and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECI) have launched a community-based rural tourism project in the Andean town of Pinchollo, located in the spectacular Colca Valley.

Seven houses will be renovated to accommodate Peruvian and foreign tourists so that they can discover first-hand the local culture and ancient Andean customs.

Pinchollo resident Eloy Cacya said that the promotion of community-based rural tourism is an important alternative for the development of his town whose total population lives on agriculture.

Cacya said local authorities want to implement the successful community-based tourism project of Sibayo town, which is also located in Arequipa’s Colca Valley.

“We want to promote this kind of tourism in Pinchollo for the benefit of our people and to show its natural beauty and archaeological sites," he said.

Although the houses will be ready to receive tourists by this year-end, locals are already promoting tourism to Pinchollo, which is visited by five to seven tourists a day.

San Sebastian de Pinchollo is a little village located in the Colca Canyon, between Chivay and the "Cruz del Condor" in Caylloma province, Arequipa.

The 17th-century San Sebastián church in Pinchollo is a tourist attraction worth visiting, with a baroque altar and a baptistry with elaborately painted entrance.

The Colca Valley is located 150 km (4 hours) northeast of Arequipa.

MINISTER OF TOURISM CALLS FOR DEVELOPING
INVESTMENT PROJECTS IN REGIONS

ANDINA.- Minister for Foreign Trade Martin Perez asked regional and local governments to speed up investment projects to develop tourism in the country.

“We should be more committed with development projects, some regions underestimate this sector (tourism), hence it is a main toll to generate employment and wealth,” he said.

He said the regional government of Tacna could take more advantages of the potential they have, like Ancash and other areas of the country, such as the jungle.

Minister Perez noted that tourist operators of several cities are worried because there is no development plan of this sector, which also reduces the possibility of receiving more tourists.

He said that though Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has a quite modest budget, it can execute some investments and will be interesting if regional governments can also support this process.

In order to contribute with this purpose, Mincetur signed on last week an agreement with the Special Agency of the Chamber of Commerce of Florence (Promofirenze) of Italy, to establish channels of coordination and cooperation for the promotion and development of rural tourism in Peru.

PUNO AUTHORITIES DEVELOP
NEW STRATEGY TO BOOST TOURISM

ANDINA.- In a bid to increase tourist arrivals in the southern highland department of Puno, local authorities are now developing a regional strategic plan to identify and promote tourist attractions in Puno’s thirteen provinces.

The president of Puno’s Regional Chamber of Tourism (Caretur), Manuel Quiñones Leon, said he hopes that the plan will be implemented next year.

"Unfortunately, tourist arrivals in the region have decreased this year by almost 20% compared to 2007 and 2008, when 240,000 people visited Puno in high season," he said, citing the global crisis and social conflicts as the main reasons for this situation.

Quiñones added that the plan is developed in coordination by the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism in Puno, PromPeru, Caretur and Destination Management Organization (DMO).

"Last month we kicked off our project by visiting the towns of San Antonio de Putina, Melgar and Lampa, where we met with local authorities to know the main tourist sites and attractions.

Quiñones said they hope to visit all the 13 provinces by December this year.
