APEC MINISTERS AIM TO
RESTORE MARKET CONFIDENCE
Ministers of Trade and Foreign Affairs from the 21 APEC member economies held Wednesday their first meeting with the challenge of figuring out how to restore confidence in the market amid a global financial crisis, Peruvian minister Mercedes Aráoz said.

At the opening of the first closed-door AMM Retreat at the National Museum in Lima, minister Aráoz said that the current global financial crisis brings a wide variety of opportunities and challenges for the APEC economies.

"How to promote growth and restore market confidence are the first topics on the agenda. The multilateral trading system is also a crucial element and needs our support and commitment so that the current negotiations reach a successful conclusion," she said.

During the first AMM Retreat, Asia Pacific ministers will shape up a final declaration and present it to the forum’s heads of state and presidents.

Aráoz mentioned that another issue to be addressed is how to take better advantage of APEC's unique structure in order to achieve greater integration in the region.

"We will also discuss the promotion of multilateral trade system, investment and market liberalization, corporate social responsibility (...) We are sure that the ministerial meeting will provide useful recommendations to the leaders’ meeting," she added.

CHINESE PRESIDENT ON
LATIN AMERICAN TOUR

Chinese president Hu Jintao began a Latin America tour to Costa Rica, Cuba and Peru, where he will participate in the Leaders’ Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum.

Tomorrow, the Chinese leader will be welcomed by his Costa Rican counterpart Oscar Arias, with whom he will hold a private meeting and then they will sign a series of agreements.

Hu's visit to Costa Rica is the highest-level visit by a Chinese official to the first Central American country to break off Taiwan ties in favor of China, in June last year.

Then, China’s president will visit Cuba as well as Peru, where he will attend the Leaders’ Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum held in Lima.

The Chinese delegation is composed of about 500 people among ministers, senior officials, entrepreneurs and nearly a hundred journalists.

China and Peru are poised to sign a free trade agreement when the Chinese president visits the Andean country in the next days, a sign of the growing ties between the Asian economic giant and the resource-rich countries whose exports it needs.

China has become the Latin America's second-biggest trading partner after the United States, with trade between China and the region up 13-fold since 1995 to $110 billion in 2007.

Last month, China became a member of the Inter-American Development Bank and committed $350 million as a donor country.

TOURISTS INVITED TO VISIT CUSCO'S
NON-TRADITIONAL PLACES DURING APEC HOLIDAY

Cusco's Regional Tourism Chamber (Caretur) suggested tourists to take advantage of the four-day holiday weekend on the occasion of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit by visiting non-traditional tourist destinations in Cusco, an Andean city known for its rich culture, scenic landscapes and Inca heritage.

Caretur president Boris Gomez said Cusco offers several tourist sites besides Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley of the Incas; “however, they are not properly promoted, so this is a great opportunity for those who wants to visit new spectacular destinations."

For example, the San Pedro de Andahuaylillas Church, which is considered as the “Sistine Chapel” of The Americas because of the quality of its art pieces.

"This baroque-style church, which has been recently restored, has an interesting collection of paintings by the Academy of Cusco, silver work and baroque altars,” he stated.

BEACH BOOKED FOR APEC HOLIDAY

Over 60 percent of hotels in the picturesque beach town of Máncora in northern Peru have been booked for the upcoming holiday weekend in Lima and Callao on the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit, local tourism official Harry Shuller said.

Foreign tourists mainly come from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, New Zealand, and the United States.
