OVER 100 THOUSAND PEOPLE EXPECTED
TO WITNESS INTI RAYMI IN CUSCO
(ANDINA).- Around 110 thousand people including foreign and domestic tourists are expected to witness the colorful Inca festival of Inti Raymi, said the head of Cusco’s department of tourism festivals and events, Giovanni Madrid Escobar.
Madrid Escobar explained that this number includes those who have paid to witness this fantastic ancient ceremony to take place on June 24, and those who prefer to climb a nearby hill and watch the annual Inti Raymi festival.
“This year’s Inti Raymi festival will be held once again at the Sacsayhuaman fortress thanks to an integral plan that provides cleaning and maintenance of the Archaeological Park of Sacsayhuaman, which has helped us to get the authorization from the National Institue of Culture,” he said.
Inti Raymi, Festival of the Sun, coincides with the winter solstice and the harvests season. The Sacsayhuaman fortress is the stage for the ceremony, following a detailed script, including the sacrifice of two llamas to tell the future. The Inca, who urges the authorities in Cusco’s main square to govern well, presides over the ceremony. At dusk, the Inca announces the end of the day’s ceremonies and merry-making starts.

PUNO TO HOST INTERNATIONAL
MEETING ON RURAL TOURISM
(ANDINA).- The Andean city of Puno, located on the shores of Lake Titicaca at 3827 masl (12555 ft), will host in November the Second Meeting of Communitarian Rural Tourism which seeks to share Peru's experience on this matter with other countries in order to improve living standards of rural communities.
By promoting rural tourism, Peru aims to offer foreign or domestic travelers, a personalized contact, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the physical and humane environment of the countryside and, as far as possible, sharing the activities, traditions and life styles of the local population.
After the success of last year’s First National Meeting of Communitarian Rural Tourism held in the Urubamba Valley in Cusco, the regional director of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Porfirio Aguilar, said he anticipates this year's meeting will bring together more than 500 people engaged in rural tourism including foreign and domestic entrepreneurs and leaders of indigenous communities.
“The goal is to encourage the development of community based tourism in Peru in order to improve the livelihoods of people living in rural areas”, said Aguilar.
“Rural tourism gives Andean communities the opportunity to show visitors their culture, customs, art, mysticism and hospitality”, he added.

MORE THAN 120 PIECES OF SICAN CULTURE RETURN
TO LAMBAYEQUE AFTER EXHIBITION IN CANADA
(ANDINA).- Under strict security measures, more than 120 archaeological pieces from the Sican culture or Lambayeque, which were exhibited for nearly two years in different museums in Canada, returned to Sican National Museum of the province of Ferreñafe (Lambayeque ).
The sample of the Sican culture, whose greatest splendor took place between the years 800 to 1,100 after Christ, was exhibited at the Art Nikel Museum of the University of Calgary, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa.
The director of the Sican Museum, Elero Carlos Arevalo, recalled that the exhibition was a representative sample of collections that protects this cultural complex.
He noted that the exhibition consisted of ceremonial artifacts such as necklaces, jewelry and ornaments, most of them made in gold.
He argued that one of the most important part of the exhibition in Canada was called the "Mask of the Lord of Sican", made in the peak period of the culture. It has just over 30 centimeters high and one kilo of pure gold.

PRESIDENT GARCÍA EXPECTS UNASUR TO
ESTABLISH COMMON CURRENCY AND CITIZENSHIP
(ANDINA).- Peruvian president Alan García Perez said that the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) is a historical milestone and expressed his confidence that it will will establish a common currency and citizenship for all member states and eliminate the political barriers of border and exchange rates.

In addition, president García assured Unasur will further strengthen both political and economic ties in the region. During the meeting held at Ulysses Guimaraes Convention Center, Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva greeted President García on his 59 years birthday.

REGIONAL TOURISM PROMOTION FUND
TO SUPPORT TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN LIMA
(ANDINA).- In an initiative to promote tourism in Peru, regional president of Lima, Nelson Chui Mejía, proposed on Wednesday the creation of a Regional Tourism Promotion Fund (Fopture in Spanish) which includes active participation of regional government, municipalities, international organizations and all members of public and private sectors.
“This Fund will help to promote areas where the most important tourist circuits are located”, he pointed out.
The proposal is part of a number of contributions and observations to the new General Law of Tourism, in the framework of a decentralized public audience carried out in the Andean city of Huancayo by the Congress' Foreign Trade and Tourism Commission.

FIVE MOST LUXURIOUS HOTELS IN SOUTH AMERICA
(ANDINA).- For second consecutive year, Hotel Monasterio in Cusco ranks among the five most luxurious hotels in South America, according to Ultratravel magazine, part of the Daily Telegraph group of the United States. The Ultratravel 100 is a list based on the magazine's readers opinions. This poll awards the 100 airlines, hotels, travel companies, countries, cruise companies, spas and ski resorts that the magazine's readers regard as the best providers in the world of luxury travel.

INTI RAYMI 2008 TO BE ENJOYED WITH
ENVIRONMENTAL AND CULTURAL RESPONSIBILITY
(ANDINA).- The Municipality of Cuzco officially presented Cuzco Festivities and the 2008 Inti Raymi, which will be carry out this year in the framework of an ecological campaign, with environmental and cultural responsibility, according to Marina Sequeiros, mayor of the region.
Sequeiros stated that Sacsayhuamán Archeological Park will be carefully cared from any environmental impact during and after the festivities.
For first time Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park will be exclusively used for the traditional Inti Raymi with a deep respect for the environment.
The mayor added that 200 portable toilets and hundreds of bins will be installed around all the sanctuary so nobody throw rubbish around this place.
The minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Mercedes Aráoz, greeted this initiative trusting that these festivities will be well- received by foreign and Peruvian tourists.
“This celebration gathers our Pre-Columbine history and show the world what we were, what we are and what will be as a country: grateful, hospitable and generous”, she stated.
Aráoz stated that the Commission of the Peruvian Export and Tourism Promotion Agency (PromPerú) will support this celebrations by providing more than three thousand magazines with information about the activities and diffusing it on its web site.

SLOVENIA, AUSTRIA AND SPAIN BUSINESS LEADERS
EAGER TO INVEST IN PERU'S HOTEL INDUSTRY
(ANDINA).- After the V Summit of Heads of State and Government of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC), which was carried out last week in Lima, some hotel industry business leaders of Slovenia, Austria and Spain are interested in investing in this city and in the northern zone of the country, reported Peru’s Hotel Society (SHP).
The general manager of SHP, Tibisay Monsalve, said that the above-mentioned investments could be defined through alliances with potential Peruvian partners.
“For example, the Slovenian business leaders are interested in investing in spa hotels and thermal springs as well as in corporative hotels in Lima and the country’s interior”, she stated.
Spanish and Australian business leaders are interested in investing in corporative hotels in Lima since they have evaluated inmediate future demand in Peru which reflects an upward trend in business visitors.
Monsalve said that in 2009 important hotel chains of the United States, Spain, Dominican Republic and Colombia will begin investments in the northeast zone of the country.
