TOURISTS ENTICED TO TOUR
MACHU PICCHU
100 YEARS AFTER ITS
DISCOVERY
ANDINA. Intense Peru, a tour
and travel agency located in
Lima, recently announced a
10% savings on all Machu
Picchu tours on the occasion
of the 100-year anniversary
of the discovery of the Lost
City of the Incas by
American archaeologist Hiram
Bingham.
Every year an increasing
number of travelers come
from different parts of the
world to admire the Historic
Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
Some travellers have little
information and some others
not only are well prepared
but fill their tour guides
with enthusiastic comments
and questions. And the truth
is that no matter how much
you know about Machu Picchu,
absolutely everyone is
impressed by its rich and
intriguing history, splendid
architecture, and enigmatic
location.

For the last 100 years,
archaeologists have
elaborated different
theories of why Machu Picchu
was built at the top of a
mountain, why the citadel
was abandoned by the Incas,
what was the purpose of
building it, who inhabited
it or simply who really
discovered Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu’s discovery is
attributed to American
archaeologist Hiram Bingham
who shared his findings with
the international media and
made Machu Picchu an
international icon over the
years.
With limited information, he
concluded that Machu Picchu
was Tampu-tocco, the place
where Manco Capac - first
Inca ruler - was born. He
also stated that Machu
Picchu was Vilcabamba, the
last refuge of the Incas
during the Spanish Conquest.
And finally, he thought that
Machu Picchu was a refuge of
the Virgins of the Sun –
“privileged women” - in an
attempt to escape from the
Spanish Conquistadors.
More recent findings proved
Hiram Bingham wrong,
indicating that Machu Picchu
was built at the end of the
reign of Pachacutek, the
last Inca Emperor before the
Spanish conquest.
Other theories state that
the purpose of this
captivating place was a
royal retreat where the
Incas could also enjoy the
good weather, a naturally
defensive location, and a
religious place which might
have been part of its day to
day life.
"No matter how much you
know, how many theories
there are about its origins
... the lost city of the
Incas, Machu Picchu, is and
always will be a
breath-taking life time
experience” continued Arce.

PERU TO LAUNCH ONLINE
TICKETING
SYSTEM FOR MACHU PICCHU THIS
MONTH
ANDINA. Authorities in Cusco
announced that tourists
wishing to visit Peru's top
tourist attraction, Machu
Picchu, will be able to book
their tickets online from
anywhere in the world
starting late April 2011.
At present, the system
allows tourists to make
reservations online and pay
for their tickets at any
branch of Banco de la Nación
nationwide or at the
Ministry of Culture's office
in the Imperial City.
"By the end of this month,
people will be able to pay
with VISA card. Once payment
is made, tourists can print
out their tickets and go
directly to Machu Picchu,"
said Cusco's Culture
Director, Juan Julio Garcia
Rivas.
He added that the aim is to
use the online payment
system to book tours and
other tourism services.
"Soon we will launch an
official invitation to add
quality cultural products to
the system," said Garcia
Rivas, "we will invite the
Catholic Church to offer its
tickets for the 'religious
circuit' through the
website."

MISSOURI STUDENTS EXPLORE PERU,
MACHU PICCHU OVER SPRING BREAK
ANDINA. Twenty-one students from
Missouri University of Science and
Technology spent spring break exploring
the ancient civil and geological
engineering marvels of Peru.
The students - 11 undergraduates and 10
graduate students - visited Lima, Peru's
capital, as well as Cusco and the fabled
mountaintop Incan city of Machu Picchu
during March 28-April 1.
There they conducted field trips
focusing on geological and geotechnical
engineering aspects of the Inca
civilization, according to an article on
mst.edu.
"For the undergraduate students, we were
trying to give them more of an
introduction into the amazing ancient
geological and geotechnical engineering
of Peru," says Dr. Neil Anderson,
professor of geological sciences and
engineering at Missouri S&T. "The
graduate students, under the direction
of Dr. Ronaldo Luna, looked at features
from a much more comprehensive
perspective."
Anderson and Luna, professor of civil,
architectural and environmental
engineering, coordinated the trip, along
with Dr. Robert Laudon, professor
emeritus and former chair of geological
sciences and engineering.
During the trip, the students visited
stone temples such as Coricancha, in
Cusco, and toured archeological sites
where multi-ton sculpted granite blocks
had been transported by a culture that
used neither wheels nor pack animals.
They also visited agricultural terraces
that extend hundreds of feet up the
sides of steep mountains, ancient
quarries and the ruins of Machu Picchu,
the ancient mountaintop "lost city"
known as an architectural and
engineering marvel.
The students were enrolled in one of two
courses on geotechnical engineering
practices of Incan civilization: a
three-hour graduate-level course for
civil engineering and geological
engineering students, and a one-hour
course for undergraduate students in
geological engineering. Both courses are
offered through Missouri S&T's distance
and continuing education program.
This is the fourth year S&T
undergraduate students have participated
in the spring break trip to Peru and the
second year graduate students were
involved. A collection of photographs
from the 2010 trip is available online.
A collection from the 2011 trip will
also be available at a later date.
LAN PERU PLANS NEW
DOMESTIC ROUTES
ANDINA. Lan Peru is planning
to launch new domestic
routes in the second half of
2011 and has special
interest in Andean cities
like Huaraz (Ancash) and
Jauja (Junin), according to
its general manager Jorge
Vílches.
There are five airlines
operating in the domestic
market (Lan Peru, Taca, LC
Busre, Star Peru and
Peruvian Airlines) but only
one of them flies from Lima
to Andahuaylas (Apurimac),
Huaraz, Talara (Piura) and
Huancayo (Junin).
"I think there is great
potential in the regions,
that’s why we are always
looking to develop new
projects," Vilches said.
He added that adequate
airport infrastructure and
security for investors and
consumers are basic
requirements to open up a
new route.
"In recent years, most
airports have been improved
thanks to a concession
program implemented by the
government, but there are
still other [airports] to be
remodelled," he said.

CUSCO PLANS TOURIST CIRCUIT LINKING
VILCABAMBA, MACHU PICCHU AND
CHOQUEQUIRAO
ANDINA. Regional authorities in Cusco,
southeast Peru, are working on a new
tourist circuit covering a host of
lesser-known attractions in Vilcabamba,
Machu Picchu and Choquequirao.
"Although every area has its own tourist
attractions, there are many
[attractions] that go unnoticed because
they are not part of a circuit," said
the head of Cusco's Plan Copesco, Adriel
Gamarra.
He said the project will aim to enhance
the tourism image of local communities,
further promote the preservation of
archaeological sites, improve trekking
routes and strengthen the regional
tourism management, among other goals.
"The initiative also seeks to diversify
the tourist offer in the Imperial City.
In addition to Machu Picchu, Cusco has
other tourism potential areas like
Choquequirao and Vilcabamba, which can
contribute to the social and economic
development of the region," Gamarra
added.
As an example, he noted that the Lord of
Wari tomb, recently found in the
archaeological complex of Espiritu Pampa
in the Vilcabamba district, "has amazed
the world and could easily become a
major attraction such as those of Machu
Picchu and Choquequirao."

RALLY DAKAR 2012 OFFICIALLY
ANNOUNCED IN LIMA
ANDINA. The Rally Dakar off-road 2012, which
includes Peru as host of the four final
stages and closing ceremony on January 15,
was officially announced at press
conference.
For its 4th South American edition, the
Dakar's route has welcomed Peru as part of
this world-renowned race, which will
showcase the image of the country in front
of the world.
“With Peru will discover new atractions,
that’s why we decided to choose Lima as a
host,” Director of the Dakar rally Etienne
Lavigne said.
Riders, drivers and co-pilots will be
tackling a route that measures 1,300
kilometres. They will come through Tacna,
pass through Arequipa, Moquegua, Ica and
Lima, where the award ceremony will take
place.
Enhancing the relations with the continent,
this year the rally will discover Peru,
giving the adventure a pan-American feel.
The Dakar Rally is an annual rally raid type
of off-road automobile race. Most of the
competitive special sections are off-road,
crossing dunes, mud, camel grass and rocks,
among others.

KULTUR RELEASES DOCUMENTARY
ON MACHU PICCHU
ANDINA. Kultur is proud to announce the DVD
release from the Sites of the World’s
Culture Series: Machu Picchu and the Legacy
of the Incas.
This one-hour documentary explores the
mysteries of the ancient Incan city of Machu
Picchu. It will be available on DVD on April
26 at the retail price of $19.99.
Machu Picchu is one of the earth’s magical
places. The ruined city seems to be the work
of giants, full of mysteries, unwilling to
reveal its secrets. Nevertheless, more than
any other place, it has become the symbol of
the vanished culture of its architects, the
Incas.
They were at the height of their power when
they were smitten by a hitherto unknown
disease: the insatiable greed for gold which
the Europeans introduced to America.
This has been responsible, right up to the
present day, for the destruction of
countless treasures created by the skillful
Incan craftsmen, whose empire extended over
three hundred thousand square miles.
Despite this devastation, numerous
buildings, statues and other finds still
testify to the creative energy of the Incas
and their ancestors.
BRAZILIAN NEWSPAPER HIGHLIGHTS MIRAFLORES
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS, COMPARES IT TO IPANEMA
ANDINA. Limean district of Miraflores has
turned into one of the many reasons for
visitors to stop considering the city of
Lima as a simple connection to the country’s
most popular tourist destinations, such as
Cusco, Brazil’s O Globo newspaper reports.
O Globo online version published an article
in which compares Miraflores to Ipanema, one
of the most popular and famous areas of Rio
de Janeiro.
In the article, author Zean Bravo describes
the district and makes a list of all the
interesting places that visitors can find
there, like Parque del Amor (Park of Love)
and its amazing view to the Pacific Ocean.
"It's one of the most charming districts of
Lima. It’s a place for the city, as Ipanema
is for Rio de Janeiro," wrote Bravo.
He also stresses that Larcomar, built
overlooking the sea, has become a meeting
point for entertainment and socialization.
"It's worth walking along the coast of
Miraflores. While going for a stroll, it’s
common to run into someone wearing colorful
shorts offering surf classes.”

FOREIGN ARRIVALS TO PERU
ROSE 23.9% IN FEBRUARY
ANDINA. Foreign arrivals to Peru totalled
283,354 in February, an increase of 23.9
percent compared to the same month last
year, Peru’s National Statistics Institute (INEI)
reported.
According to INEI, 48.7 percent of
foreigners arrived from Chile, 10.4 percent
from the United States, 9 percent from
Ecuador, 5.9 percent from Bolivia, 4.9
percent from Spain, 3.9 percent from
Colombia, 3.6 percent from Argentina and
Brazil and 2.3 percent from Holland and
Panama, respectively.
In addition, 22.8 percent of the people who
arrived to Peru are from the US, 9.5 percent
from Chile, 7.3 percent from Argentina, 6.3
percent from Spain, 5.8 percent from Brazil,
and 5.4 percent from Colombia.
Some 3.8 percent come from Canada and Japan,
3.1 percent from Germany and France, 3
percent from Ecuador, 2.6 percent from
Mexico and Great Britain, and 2.5 percent
from Venezuela, among others.
In turn, the number of Peruvians who
travelled abroad totalled 228,810, an
increase of 19.3 percent compared to the
same period last year.
The main destination countries were Chile
with 44.4 percent, followed by the United
States with 8.9 percent, Ecuador 6.5
percent, Argentina 4.4 percent, Spain 4.2
percent, Brazil 3.7 percent and Colombia and
Panama with 3 percent.

PERU'S ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES TO
ATTRACT 3 MILLION VISITORS IN 2011
ANDINA. At least three million people will
visit the archaeological sites run by Peru’s
Ministry of Culture during 2011, according
to Culture Minister Juan Ossio.
Minister Ossio praised the research,
inspection and conservation work done by
archaeologists in the country, as they have
helped declare some 12,360 archaeological
sites as cultural heritage of Peru.
The minister urged Peruvians to take care
and defend our rich and varied
archaeological treasures, including relics
(ceramics, textiles, stone and wooden
artifacts) and sites (temples, palaces and
urban centers).
In 2010, 2.89 million people visited the
archaeological sites and museums run by the
Ministry of Culture.
The archaeological places in Cusco attracted
the largest number of visitors with 1.06
million people, followed by Lima with
500,281, Lambayeque with 331,789, La
Libertad with 288,240, Ancash with 132,751
and Cajamarca with 129,742.
Machu Picchu was Peru's top attraction with
583,480 visitors, followed by the Royal Tomb
of Sipan Museum with 159,846 visitors, the
National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology
and History of Peru (150,733), the Museum of
Pachacamac (117,656) and the Huaca del Sol y
de la Luna (108,640).

OVER 95,000 PEOPLE VISITED MACHU
PICCHU EXHIBITION IN FIRST WEEK
ANDINA. Over 95,000 Peruvians and foreign tourists
visited the exhibition of archaeological treasures
from Machu Picchu at the Government Palace in Lima.
The exhibition features some of the artifacts used
by the Incas in their daily life, ceremonies and
productive activities during ancient times, said the
presidential press office.
It is open from 09:00 to 20:00 at Tupac Amaru Hall
and is guided by specialized staff members from the
Ministry of Culture, the Presidency and the Tourism
Police.
The artifacts, which include ceramics, skeletal
remains, stones and metal objects which were used by
the Incas, are part of the first batch returned by
Yale University some days ago.
The "Machu Picchu, after 100 years: The reunion”
exhibition will be open to the public until Sunday,
April 17.

PERU TO ATTEND HOTEL

ANDINA. Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism
(Mincetur) will participate in the event: Hotel
Opportunities Latin America (HOLA) set to take place
April 12-14 at JW Marriott Marquis in the city of
Miami, Florida, United States.
The event is designed to provide an annual meeting
place for hotel executives, investors, lenders,

PERUVIAN RESTAURANTS SET TO
CONQUER PALATES IN BOLIVIA
ANDINA. More than ten Peruvian
restaurants in La Paz will be
offering the best of their
cuisine at the 6th Gastronomic
Festival of Peru to be held in
the Bolivian capital on April
16.
The event is hosted by the
Hermandad de la Santísima Virgen
de Chapi with the support of the
Peruvian Embassy and General
Consulate in La Paz as well as
local cultural organizations.
The festival will take place in
the traditional Plaza Avaroa in
the Sopocachi neighborhood of La
Paz.
Some of the Peruvian delicacies
to be served in the festival are
cebiche, carapulcra, rocoto
relleno, chupe de camarones and
a selection of delectable
desserts.
The Organization of the American
States (OAS) recently presented
Peru with the "Cultural Heritage
of the Americas" award in
recognition of the richness of
its gastronomy.
